Chlorine

Chlorine (CL2) is a toxic gas made up of two chlorine atoms. Chlorine plays an important role in water sanitation as it can kill bacteria and other microbes present in water.

How is Chlorine produced?

In nature, chlorine is found in the form of sodium chloride (salt), which does not itself pose a health threat. Risk factors occur when industrial processes use chlorine, such as the production of plastics, textiles, antiseptics and household cleaning products, and solvents for dry cleaning and metal degreasing.

What are the health risks and environmental effects of Chlorine?

Exposure to high levels of chlorine gas can lead to coughing and chest pain, respiratory irritation, and damage. There is also a risk of explosions if chlorine gas reacts with flammable materials present in the environment. Workplace exposure limits and ample ventilation are important. This prevents both short and long-term exposure to chlorine gas.

Why use an Aeroqual Chlorine sensor?

Aeroqual offers a portable or fixed chlorine gas sensor for leak detection and to meet internal and regulatory limits. We do not offer sensors capable of measuring chlorine concentrations in water. Chlorine in water is less harmful as it will react with naturally occurring organic compounds.  However, our sensors will detect concentrations of chlorine vapor and gas from these applications.
