Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde (CH2O) is a naturally-occurring organic compound known for its pungent, irritating odor. It’s found in nature and is used in several industrial applications.

How is Formaldehyde produced?

Most formaldehyde found in the environment is a result of processes in the upper atmosphere. It is an intermediate gas that is produced during the oxidation of methane. It can also be an indicator of human-generated pollution and biomass burning. However, it does not accumulate in the environment as it is easily broken down by sunlight.

Man-made formaldehyde is often a common precursor to more complex compounds with industrial uses. For example, the textile industry uses formaldehyde resin to produce non-crease fabrics. It is also a key component in the manufacture of automobiles. Formaldehyde solution is commonly used as a disinfectant to kill bacteria and fungi and to preserve tissues or cells for scientific analysis.

What are the health risks and environmental effects of Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde in all forms is toxic to humans and animals. Occupational exposure is mainly through inhaling the vapors. The thermal/chemical decomposition of formaldehyde-based resins or emissions from formaldehyde solutions commonly cause these vapors.

Exposure to formaldehyde gas can cause headaches, difficulty breathing, and a burning sensation in the throat.

Why use an Aeroqual Formaldehyde sensor?

Real-time monitoring is essential for limiting exposure and protecting worker health. Aeroqual has a range of portable monitors suitable for measuring atmospheric formaldehyde gas. We also offer portable and fixed monitors for the industrial monitoring of formaldehyde.
