Next generation in urban air monitoring

Organisations responsible for upgrading, expanding, or building urban air quality monitoring networks need to consider all the options. Population growth, rapid urbanization and industrialization, and urban sprawl, are putting pressure on shrinking public budgets. Little wonder that organisations the world over are looking for alternatives to current high cost “reference” air quality monitoring systems (AQMS).

A network based on reference stations is not always viable

Air monitoring with reference stations involves making a few measurements very accurately at a handful of fixed points across the city. The stations are expensive, large, and power hungry which makes locating and relocating them difficult. This results in a lack of spatial resolution in the air quality data which must then be compensated for by modelling. Maintenance costs and the skill needed to maintain the equipment are another limiting factor.

Equipment that supplements and complements the reference network

Our approach is different but also strongly complimentary. Our sensor-based technology enables compact air quality monitoring stations the size of a small suitcase (the AQM 60). Much cheaper, mobile and with lower power consumption, they can be placed at greater density than reference stations, and can be easily relocated. By calibrating and cross-referencing to reference AQMS the integrity of the air quality data is assured.

New tools for ambient pollution monitoring

Customers can choose multiple AQM 60s to completely replace or build their air quality monitoring network, or use them to expand an existing reference network. A single AQM 60 can be used to scout sites for locating future reference stations and can be deployed on a short term basis in response to public complaints. We also offer handheld ultraportable monitors for providing indicative air quality information.

Current sophisticated, expensive ambient air pollution monitoring technology is not economically sustainable as the sole approach and cannot keep up with current needs, specifically new monitoring networks and special purpose monitoring
