With a very high correlation to U.S. EPA reference analyzers, the AQS 1 measures the key indicator pollutants of photochemical smog, PM2.5 and ozone (O3), continuously and in real-time.


The AQS 1 system is modular. Each sensor is housed in a module, and the system is built with only the modules you require. The AQS 1 can measure particulate matter (PM) and up to three gases at the same time. Each module is connected with the control system for air sampling, data and power. All module data is available to view through our air monitoring software, Aeroqual Cloud interface.

At any time, the AQS 1 can be upgraded to measure additional parameters by adding new modules in the field. You can choose from the following parameters:

  • Particulate matter: TSP, PM10, PM2.5, PM1
  • Gases: O3, NO2, VOCs, CO
  • Meteorological: temperature, humidity, rain, pressure, wind speed / direction, solar radiation
  • Noise
What does the AQS 1 measure?


The AQS 1 combines a robust light-scattering nephelometer, and Aeroqual’s industry leading gas analyser from the AQM 65 platform. Key technology unique to Aeroqual sets the AQS 1 apart in the industry, including:

Pumped sampling system. This provides a steady flow of air to the sensor modules. It also allows for the use of filters which protect the sensors from airborne impurities – therefore extending their operating life.

Automatic Baseline Correction (ABC). Pioneered in the AQM by Aeroqual, this technique sees the automatic correction of the ‘zero’ baseline every 60 seconds. The technique corrects for cross interferences and sensor drift – two of the biggest problems for sensor-based monitors.

Interference-free NO2 measurement. The NO2 module design incorporates an electrochemical sensor, and Aeroqual’s Automatic Baseline Correction (ABC) technology that maintains measurement stability. Most NO2 electrochemical sensors also respond equally to ozone (O3), so the resulting sensor output is NO2+O3. To know exactly how much NO2 is present, our NO2 electrochemical sensor uses an integrated O3 filter.

Tried and tested PM sensing. A nephelometer made by Met One Instruments and custom-designed for Aeroqual is integrated into the AQS 1. Compared to low cost optical counters, the Met One nephelometer is robust and proven to last for years in the field. In the AQS 1 the nephelometer is coupled with a pumped sampling system and an inlet heater which corrects for humidity interference.

Factory and Field Calibration. The AQS 1 sensor modules are calibrated against high purity gas standards prepared under ISO 6143 to ensure traceability to reference materials from National Metrology Institutes. The AQS 1 is field calibrated using the same standard reference materials as a US EPA / EU certified analyzer (i.e. calibration gas and dilution calibrators).

Aeroqual Cloud Software. Connect to your instrument remotely via WIFI, Ethernet or cellular. Accessed through a custom-built software interface, Aeroqual Cloud gives you and other trusted users secure access to your air quality data in real-time. It also enables engineers to provide remote technical support and servicing for your instrument. Aeroqual Cloud is browser based, so simply connect your computer or device and away you go.

Aeroqual’s patented sensor technology enables the AQS 1 to deliver data with very strong correlation to U.S. EPA approved monitors (Near Reference) over extended periods of time – several years with appropriate maintenance.

In head-to-head tests with traditional U.S. EPA-approved analyzers, the AQS 1 has shown R2 correlations as high as 0.98.

Extensive field tests have been run in the USA, China and New Zealand. Ozone and PM results are covered in the reports from the China and USA tests. Data capture rates for China were above 96% and 100% for USA. The results show excellent correlation with independently run U.S. EPA-approved reference methods. We are still gathering long term NO2 datasets. Initial data is available on request. A snapshot of the NO2 data below shows very strong correlation with a US-EPA approved chemiluminescent NOx analyzer. Over a 20-day period the AQS 1 NO2 demonstrated R2 correlation of 0.95.
